Three men sentenced to jail for killing endangered snow leopard in Gilgit Baltistan

The authorities arrested five persons for killing a snow leopard in Hoper valley of Nagar district in Gilgit-Baltistan. The wildlife magistrate sentenced three of the accomplices.

A wildlife court in Gilgit-Baltistan has sentenced two accused to two years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 500,0000. However, the other two sentenced to one-year imprisonment each for poaching a snow leopard illegally.

Gilgit-Baltistan Police in action

Police in Gilgit-Baltistan arrested five suspects for poaching snow leopards.

Department staff gathered details about the accused through various sources including social media. After gathering enough data, with the help of police and other law enforcement agencies. They raided various places and arrested accused Muhammad Saleem, son of Hussain Ali, on Tuesday.

The barbaric 25-year old Mohammad Saleem, a resident of Hoper valley confessed to his crime and told the authorities that:

“He along with his friends killed a female snow leopard near Hoper glacier almost 12 days ago. Moreover, the leopard was living with her two cubs in the mountain near the glacier and they set the cubs free after killing the leopard.”

Meanwhile, the wildlife team was able to recover the skin of the killed leopard. A search operation is underway to find the missing cubs, as per details.

According to the statement, the accused also identified his other accomplices in the preliminary investigation including Mohammad son of Malik Arshad, Ibrahim son of Jafar Ali, Mohammad Amin son of Isa Khan, and Alam Jan son of Bulbul Jan.

The court, after a summary trial, handed down various sentences to the accused.

The Magistrate sentenced Saleem son of Hassan and Muhammad son of Malik Arshad to two years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50,00000. In case of non-payment of the fine, the convicts will have to spend another six months in jail.

The other two convicts sentenced to one year in prison and fined, while one co-convict was sentenced to one month in prison.

Social media is a powerful tool indeed. This case has come to surface when the accused boy posted the picture of a dead leopard on social media. The picture went viral which leads him to straight to jail.
