Pakistan to Export Cigarettes in Gulf Countries Worth $50 Million


Islamabad: Pakistan has been exporting a lot of goods to other countries but this came out new when sources said that Pakistan is going to export cigarettes worth 50 million dollars to Gulf countries.

According to the sources the local tobacco companies received an import order earlier but could not pass  the quality standards because of which the whole stock had to be wasted. Now again Pakistani tobacco firms have received an import order of cigarette from gulf countries, majorly Saudi Arabia.

“All the standards set by the importers have now been met successfully and we are expecting the export of cigarettes to Middle Eastern countries to start by next month,” said a top-ranked source in Pakistan Tobacco Board while talking to media . “It is a positive development that Pakistan will be exporting the finished product for the first time. We may be able to export cigarettes to other countries once we successfully capture the Gulf market.”

According to the source, Pakistan has a market share of around $25 million in the $80 billion trade of world tobacco. , Pakistan has been exporting tobacco (raw) worth $25 million to some European countries and Middle East, which is almost 30 percent of the tobacco being produced in the country. The rest of tobacco is consumed in making cigarettes for domestic market.

As per figures from the year 2018-19 , Pakistan exported  108,000 tonnes of tobacco worth $24.4 million to  26 countries.

Pakistan’s major tobacco export destinations included Myanmar, UK, South Korea, Belgium, Afghanistan, Malaysia, Indonesia,UAE, Paraguay, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Poland, Australia,, Netherlands, USA, Singapore, Canada, Ukraine, Philippines, Bangladesh, Italy, Russia, Yemen, and Bulgaria.
