Pakistan, China finalize ML-I project worth $8.2bn: Sheikh Rasheed

Federal Minister of Railways Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed said on Wednesday that Pakistan and China have finalized the multi-million dollar MainLine-I (ML-I) project as a part of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). This project consists of a dual railway track that will automatically reduce the reaching time from Peshawar to Karachi. Sheikh Rasheed was the part of Imran Khan’s deputation during their visit to China.

 

The Chinese Minister Li Xiaopeng said in his meeting that this investment in Pakistan would be fruitful and will be the key to progress as it will create vistas of opportunities and progression for Pakistan, a press released from Beijing said.

Matters of joint interest came under their discussion and techniques to upgrade the system of Pakistan Railways were also discussed in this meeting. While expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Imran Khan for showing keen engrossment in the project, he said that the Main Line-I  (ML-I) will cover a great shape after the time span of 14 years. The Minister also shared the copies of the viability project of the fast train (ML-2)  with his Chinese counterpart. “We are planning to start work on the fast train project soon after the completion of ML-I in the next 3-4 years,” he said.

Sheikh Rashid said the ML-I will increase the speed 65-105km/hr to 120-160km/hr besides an increase in shipment volumes and railway’s shipment transport from less than 4%-20%.he said that the new signalling system will be installed in-between the route of Peshawar to Karachi.
