KANNUP (Karachi Nuclear Power Plant) K-2 has been an ambitious project under construction for a long time now. This mega-project has the potential to generate more than 1100 MW of electricity for the integrated national power grid. Construction of a nuclear reactor is an extremely complex undertaking. Pakistan, in collaboration with China launched the K-2 project to contribute significantly to the national power generation without adding to more pollution contrary to conventional power stations based on oil and coal. China just recently successfully completed Hot Function Test (HFT) for K-2 reactor, which marks taking the reactor fully under operation. Latest Hualong One Technology based, this nuclear technology experiment is good news for Pakistan.

Hualong One Technology Based Nuclear Reactors
China developed this 3rd generation nuclear reactor design for a manifold reasons, mostly accommodating costs and efficiency. This model has grown to be the most widely acceptable nuclear reactor technology in the entire world. China designed this model from scratch in an effort to compete with US based AP1000 and European-made Evolutionary Pressurized Reactor or EPR.
China’s National Nuclear Corporation is busy constructing 2 Hualong One reactors, each in China at Fuqing Nuclear Power Plant in the city Fujian and Fangchenggang Nuclear Power Plant in the city Guangxi. Whereas another Hualong One reactor each is being built at Zhangzhou Nuclear Power Plant in Fujian and Taipingling Nuclear Power Plant in Guangdong. China using its own technology proves that this latest generation of reactors is highly reliable, greener and more efficient.
China is ambitious for affirming its existence in the nuclear power sector throughout the globe. It hopes to construct Hualong One reactors all across South America and England in the years to come.
K-2 And K-3 Will Soon Be Operational
The initiation and successful completion of thermal testing in K-2 reactor brings it one step closer to get fully functional. Each K-2 and K-3 will generate 1100 MW for the national grid. The structural construction of K2 and K3 reactors had started in 2015 and 2016 respectively. Pakistani and Chinese engineers had installed the Hualong One reactors’ internals at K2 and K3 in January 2019 and April 2020 respectively. The K-2 reactor has a deadline to start feeding the grid by early next year.
