NAB turns its focus on Ahsan Iqbal Narowal corruption case

ISLAMABAD: PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal was arrested earlier today, by the National Accountability Bureau. According to a statement from the NAB spokesman,

“Ahsan Iqbal was arrested in Narowal Sports Complex corruption case.”

The NAB initiated an inquiry into the Narowal Sports City project last year on allegations of irregularities, violation of rules and corruption of Rs3 billion in the Rs6 billion project.

In the last two months, the Bureau had summoned the former interior minister and PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal two times to seek details of his income and expenditures and today to record his statement in the case.
The bureau elaborated on some of the main objections which include the violation of construction rules and no such attention to security concerns. one more objection appeared as if it was really necessary to build such a huge complex when the same funds could have been used to build a similar facility in bigger cities.

Last month the NAB investigation team visited the Narowal Sports City project to get a record for the alleged embezzlement of government funds.

While talking to media he said that “He had submitted all relevant documents regarding his income and expenditure to Rawalpindi NAB and had nothing to do with the NSCP” But sources affirmed that Ahsan Iqbal could not reply to the questions put by the NAB.

Ahsan Iqbal criticizes the government by saying that the government was engaged in character assassination of its political rivals through the NAB. He further added

“The accountability becomes a revengeful agenda if it is linked to a political agenda,”

Maryam Aurangzeb called the arrest a ‘masterpiece of NAB-Niazi nexus’. Further, she shows her dissent by saying that

“They should be ashamed of arresting a man who had an operation three years ago.”

The NAB stated that the medical check-up of the PML-N leader will be done today and Ahsan Iqbal’s Physical remand will be done on Tuesday.
