Medical groups with expertise in physiology for ear, nose and throat of human body have reported that new symptoms for Coronavirus infection have been discovered. It is the loss of sense of olfaction and taste entirely or at least to some extent. In few COVID-19 cases recently, it has been observed that the only symptoms that have appeared to a patient is the loss of taste and smell, and nothing more.

The American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Department broke to the world that the new Corona-virus patients have reported anosmia and dysgeusia as the significant symptoms that have troubled them after the infection. Anosmia is a medical term that refers to the lose of smell whereas Dysgeusia means the altered or lost sense of taste. Italy, South Korea and China have reported multiple cases of COVID-19 with similar symptoms.
Throughout the world a criteria has been set for the screening of individuals whether one is infected by the novel virus or not. Coronavirus infection is conventionally characterized by symptoms like fever, chills, runny nose, frequent dry cough, sneezing, unbearable fatigue and extreme shortness of breath. The American Academy of Otolaryngology has suggested in its report to add the symptoms of anosmia and dysgeusia in the screening criteria, as a person with these symptoms is likely to be a COVID-19 carrier.
Experts stated that a person can experience loss of taste and smell even in much less dangerous medical conditions like common cold. But, experiencing such symptoms without any prior respiratory illness very well suggests the possibility of Coronavirus infection nowadays. Any person going through anosmia and dysgeusia should readily opt for self quarantine and respective precautionary measures in order to contain further spread.
It has been reported that the most peculiar thing about this finding is that these symptoms were the only present symptoms in the people who were later on tested positive for COVID-19, and all of them are under the age of 40. Loss of sense of smell and taste cannot be quickly treated with steroids or anti-viral medication because it occurs as a result of direct damage to nervous endings by the virus cell. It is being hoped that people suffering from COVID-19 will end up recovered, hale and hearty just like after a common flu, because the symptoms have a great similarity.
