ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s former military leader General Pervez Musharraf has been sentenced to death in a high treason case by a special court on Dec 17, 2019. The court comprised of three judges namely, Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Waqar Ahmed Seth, Justice Nazar Akbar of the Sindh High Court and Justice Shahid Karim of the Lahore High Court. After listening to the arguments presented, the court sentenced Musharraf to death in absentia on treason charges proceeding from his imposition of emergency in the country in the year 2007.

The verdict was declared as a 2-1 where one of the Judge concluded to award him with life imprisonment for said treason.

It has been seen that in recent years, the judiciary has been asseverating its power by intervening against both the government and the military. As of 2017, Nawaz Sharif was been expelled and disqualified for life in a historic decision. Later, the extension of Gen Qamar Bajwa’s tenure was questioned and now the Musharraf verdict has set a record of punishing a military dictator for the first time. The cases have asserted that the Judiciary is an independent body and no one can influence its decisions whether its a military or political leadership.

Until now,  no formal statement has been made by Musharaf as he is currently undergoing critical treatment in Dubai. However, Pakistani army has shown its affliction towards this decision of the court.

Media wing of armed forces passes a statement that “The decision given by special court about General Pervez Musharraf, retired, has been received with a lot of pain and anguish by rank and file of Pakistan armed forces. An ex-army chief, chairman joint chief of staff committee and President of Pakistan, who has served the country for over 40 years, fought wars for the defense of the country can surely never be a traitor”.

A political analyst said that” The sentence against Musharraf deals a blow to the military’s image, more than that, its prestige and its unquestioned unequal authority”.

Sheikh Rasheed also shares his thoughts about Musharaf Case while talking to media.

On social media, Many artists and the public of Pakistan keep showing their love and support for Musharaf and their anger and sorrow towards this decision.

General Pervez Musharaf has not only been a veteran of 2 wars but has also led Pakistan in the most crucial times improving the country’s economy, international image, freedom of press, women rights and much more. Furthermore, where the current lawlessness at ground level in the country is at peak with criminals and murderers are getting free chits by the court, the decision has helped improve the image of justice system of Pakistan.
