Now Reading: iPhone 12 Pro Price in India Makes Taking a Round Trip Flight to Dubai to Buy it a Cheaper Alternative
Apple has recently launched four new iPhone models which include the iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. It has been announced soon after the new iPhone announcement by Apple that it would be discontinuing the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max. The company will also be reducing the prices of its existing iPhones. These include the iPhone 11, iPhone XR, and iPhone SE.
At this point, you are probably wondering what’s the catch in all this? Well, if you are someone who lives out of the US, you are probably going to have a hard time getting the newly announced iPhones. This comes at no shock to anyone as seeing the previous price trends of iPhone launches, this would be obvious. For instance, in Pakistan, the expected prices for the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone Pro Max are around Rs. 190,000, Rs. 250,000 and Rs. 260-280k respectively.
However, in India, much to the woes of the people, this exorbitant price tag is probably the highest out of all the countries with officially announced prices,. This is to such an extent that you can go fly to Dubai, buy the new iPhone there, come back and STILL manage to save money. For context, the Apple iPhone 12’s price starts at Rs 69,900 for its base variant whereas the iPhone 12 Pro base variant costs Rs 1,19,900.
Compared to this, the iPhone 12 Pro sells for Rs. 84,000 in Dubai if you go by basic currency conversion. This means that the earlier mentioned round trip flight statement holds up. Lets delve into the math for a better understanding of this mind boggling fact. The iPhone 12 pro costs Dh 4,199 in Dubai. Now if you convert this currency to Indian rupees, the price comes down to Rs. 84,000 compared to the officially announced 1,19,900.
Now, if you book a flight from Delhi or Kolkata to Dubai for November 6 or later (i.e. after the iPhone 12 Pro sale goes live), you could manage to get a return ticket for a little over Rs. 18,000. Even if you add around 10,000 rupees in other expenses, you would still manage to save some money than if you just bought it locally.
To put all this together, we get:
- Flight ticket: Indigo Rs 17929 approx
- iPhone 12 Pro 128GB: 84,000
- Some other expenses: Around Rs 10,000
- Total: Around Rs 1,11,929
- iPhone 12 Pro Price in India: Rs 1,19,900
- Money saved: Around Rs 8000
Keeping all this in mind, for Indians, to go to Dubai to buy the phone and then come back doesn’t look like such a bad idea. Though, these prices are as high as they are due to taxes and duties.
Considering this, the Dubai flight method is probably not legal. As most of the additional cost in India is tax, anyone who would be buying a phone outside the country and bringing it back with them would be bound to declare it and pay import duty.
