Islamabadis are in for a treat as the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced that they have decided to open a drive-in cinema in the Federal Capital so that its citizens can benefit from a safe outdoor activity amid the coronavirus pandemic. As per reports, the outdoor cinema is expected to be opened next month.

For those who aren’t familiar, a Drive-in theater or drive-in cinema is a form of cinema structure consisting of a large outdoor movie screen, a projection booth, a concession stand, and a large parking area for automobiles. Within this enclosed area, customers can view movies from the privacy and comfort of their cars. (Source: Wikipedia)

The topic of a drive-in cinema was brought up by a twitter user who tagged Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Hamza Shafqaat in a post and suggested that such type of cinemas should be opened in Islamabad provided the coronavirus cases. He wrote,

“Sir given, we have Covid-19 on the rise and there can’t be any big gathering in the city, how about DC office plan a car theatre every weekend in F9 until things are back to normal. Food vendors can put stalls and serve in cars.”

The DC replied to this and  hinted at the establishment of a car cinema in the city by the Islamabad administration next month.

As for details about this soon-to-be-established drive-in cinema in the Capital, according to sources in the authority, films will shown on the big screen on only weekends at first but if the citizens give positive feedback about the experience, the authorities will make it so the cinema will be opened on alternate days as well.

The drive-in theater will be setup in Islamabad in either the Shakarparian Parade Ground or F-9 Park. The people will be able to hear the films’ audio through their vehicles’ radio sets. “In a bid to provide entertainment facility amid Covid-19, we are going to start the project, which will be organized under strict standard operating procedures,” said CDA Chairman Amer Ali Ahmed, assuring that the purpose of the project is to provide entertainment to people under compliance with SOPs.

CDA’s official twitter account also confirmed the news, saying that Open-Air-Cinema of international standards will be set up in the city for the citizens to enjoy cinema by sitting in their cars in view of Corona concerns.

A press release issued by the CDA also revealed that arrangements are being made for parking of 1,000 cars for the showing of one film, doubling down that this will provide a great opportunity for the citizens to have fun while also staying safe. Director General (Environment) – Naveed Tareen – has been tasked to complete arrangement for this project. Authorities are hopeful that the project will succeed.

It is important to note here that in the 1980s, Karachi was known for its open air cinemas, though they didn’t get THAT popular. But now, during these challenging times due to spread of Covid-19, when entertainment facilities, sports and recreational activities have stopped, chances are high that this idea will become a huge success this time around.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, drive-in cinemas have gained massive popularity globally as people are forced to maintain physical distance. Several countries around the world have set up car cinemas to keep their citizens entertained during the lockdown while following SOPs so it is really great that Pakistan is following suit.
