Coronavirus Outbreak: Couple in India names newborn twins “Corona” and “Covid” amidst the country-wide lockdown.

Hailing from the Indian state of Chhattisgarh, an Indian couple have named their newborn twins “Corona” (girl) and “Covid” (boy). The couple is originally from Uttar Pradesh. The husband and wife currently live in a rented house in the Purani Basti area of Rajpur.

The twins were born in Chhattisgarh in the state capital of Raipur in Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital on March 27. The twins have also received a fair share of attention as their parents selected to name them after the current ongoing pandemic.

Preeti Verma, the 27 year-old mother of the newborn twins said that the names were given as such because of the struggles the couple had to face in the delivery because of the virus. She told a media outlet;

“The delivery happened after facing several difficulties and therefore, my husband and I wanted to make the day memorable.”

“When the hospital staff also started calling the babies Corona and Covid, we finally decided to name them after the pandemic,” the mother also added. With this, she hinted that the hospital staff suggested the names of the twins.

Struggles of the couple in the delivery

The 27 year-old mother, Verma, said that the couple faced a lot of difficulties in the delivery. They were left to fend for themselves at the time of delivery as their family members could not reach Raipur in time because of the lockdown. To make it worse, she said that they were stopped by the police multiple times while going to the hospital.

She told a news agency;

“With vehicular movement stopped, we both made it to the hospital somehow late at night after a lot of suffering. Since the deliveries happened after such difficulties, we wanted the names to be memorable and unique.”

Even the delivery itself wasn’t without difficulty. Reportedly, the twins were born by the cesarean section.

Positive meaning of the names

Vinay Verma, the father of the newborn twins added that there was also a positive connotation for these names. He said;

“Besides, these names are beautiful in their own right, with Corona being Latin for crown.”

The father further said that the coronavirus, along with all the negatives, has also had big positive effects. He told the news agency that one of the positives is that people have started taking care of their hygiene because of the virus.

He also wished that a day would come when people would associate these names not with fear of the virus, but with the cleanliness that it brought.

“Also, we want the fear associated with these names to end and the public to focus on sanitation and hygiene,” he spoke to the agency.

Potentially temporary names

The couple also said that they have received backlash from the family elders on the names. They said that they might change this decision later and give their children some other names.

The current tally for coronavirus cases in India is at 3,588 with 99 deaths and is steadily rising as the days pass by. The lockdown was meant to control the spread of the virus and it is doubtlessly doing that. But, it is also clear that it’s creating a lot of difficulties for the poor. 😥
