Coronavirus: More than 700 Iranians die after drinking alcohol to cure the virus

Coronavirus: More than 700 Iranians die after drinking alcohol to cure the virus.

Earlier this month, the Iranian government released a report which revealed that alcohol poisoning has skyrocketed ten-folds recently. The national coroner’s authority has confirmed that 728 people in Iran died from 20th of February to April 7th due to alcohol poisoning. Compared to this, last year, alcohol poisoning killed only 66 people in the country.

Iranian health ministry spokesman, Kianoush Jahanpour, said that methanol alcohol has poisoned 5,011 people in the country. Revealing that 525 people have died from swallowing toxic methanol alcohol, he added that some 90 people have lost their eyesight or were suffering eye damage because of consumption of methanol alcohol as well.

Though, Hossein Hassanian (a health ministry adviser), said that the final tally of people who have lost their eyesight and lives due to this could end up being much higher. He said this difference in death tallies is because of some alcohol poisoning victims dying outside of hospitals. “Some 200 people died outside of hospitals,” he told a media outlet.

Misinformation Surrounding Consumption Of Alcohol

Fake remedies have spread across social media everywhere. Some big leaders are also credited with the spread of these fake rumors. US president Donald Trump presented the bright idea of injecting patients with disinfectants. On the other hand, Belarusian president – Alexander Lukashenko – irresponsibly and naively advised the people to drink vodka as it would help “poison” the virus.

Consequences of these fake rumors are more prevalent in Iran where people have started believing the myth that consuming alcohol ‘kills’ the coronavirus. Due to these false rumors, WHO had to add this statement to their coronavirus myth-busters list;

“Drinking alcohol does not protect you against COVID-19 and can be dangerous”

An Iranian medical expert also expressed his concerns regarding this to a government agency. He said;

“People think that alcohol causes immunity to corona, while drinking alcohol does not eliminate corona in the body. This misconception has caused even children to drink alcohol, which can lead to death and blindness.”

Methanol alcohol is extremely dangerous as it cannot be smelled or even tasted in drinks. It causes delayed organ as well as brain damage, inflicting chest pain, nausea, hyperventilation, blindness and even coma.

Fight on ‘two fronts’

Health advisor – Hossein Hassanian – said that Iran is at a bad place in its fight with the coronavirus as compared to other countries. He stated;

“We are fighting on two fronts here. We have to both cure the people with alcohol poisoning and also fight the coronavirus.”

Iran is the worst victim of the coronavirus outbreak in the Middle East. With 5,877 deaths and more than 92,000 confirmed cases. the authorities are doing their best to control their disastrous situation but it seems that things just keep stacking up for them, not in a good way. One can now only hope that our Islamic neighbor can rebound after this deadly pandemic is over.
