On September 5, 2020, Shaheena Shaheen Baloch, a journalist with PTV Bolan was brutally murdered in Turbat, Balochistan. Shaheena was allegedly shot twice with a gun by her husband.
Shaheena was working as an anchor and morning show host at PTV Bolan. Moreover, she was the editor of a Balochi Magazine Razgahar (Saheli).
At the time of the murder, she was also an activist who was working hard for human rights and women’s rights issues.
It is pertinent to mention that, this is the second murder in the last 10 months. Both were women, journalists, and belongs to Balochistan.
Earlier on November 25, 2019, Urooj Iqbal, a female journalist was shot and killed by her husband. Iqbal was allegedly killed by her husband for not agreeing to quit her job.

FIR of Shaheena’s murder
As per details from a press release. Amjad Raheen, Shaheena’s uncle has filled the FIR against her husband Mehrab Ghichki.
Sources have affirmed that she was brought to the Teaching Hospital in Turbat by her husband, but could not survive the injuries.
According to the district Keech’s superintendent police Najeeb Panjrani
“After killing Shaheena at his uncle’s residence in the PTCL Colony, Mehrab drove her in a car and dropped her at the hospital. He then left the car at the scene and fled.”
The police have alerted all the checkpoints across Turbat to apprehend the culprit.
CFWIJ member Maria Memon, while reporting on this said.
“The two had attempted court marriage. On the other hand, reports suggest it’s a case of honor killing.”
However, the police have not confirmed it yet. The case is still under investigation.
The IFJ and the PFUJ condemn the tragic killing of Shaheena Shaheen. Undoubtedly this hideous incident disturbed the whole nation. This ongoing violence against women in Pakistan must need to stop. The perpetrators of these malicious, violent acts must be severely punished and authorities must make the safety of women a priority.
Shaheena’s culprit needs not to be spared at any cost. She actively campaigned for gender equality and women empowerment through her work. This incident puts the life of every woman journalist of Balochistan in danger.
