It is no exaggeration to say that Friends is one of the most famous comedies of modern times. Even if you have not religiously watched all episodes or binge-watch re-transmissions of Netflix TV shows, you at least know Ross, Rachel, Chandler, Phoebe, Joey, Monica and the rest of the cast who entered and left more than 10 seasons.
But did you know what role Ellen DeGeneres almost played? Or the real reason why Phoebe gave birth to her brother’s triplets? As you leaf through these facts, you’ll soon become a Friends fanatic.
1. FRIENDS WAS FILMED FOR A LIVE AUDIENCE
Converting an episode of Friends was a long process, usually five hours, with different recordings per scene and 20 minutes between scenes to change settings. The program was shot in front of 300 spectators. And that’s exactly what the sales department prefers. “It’s like a test to see if the material works, if the jokes work or if the story continues,” LeBlanc said. Perry agreed, “Our energy grows with every audience.”
2. LISA WAS SCARED OF THE DUCK
You’d never know it watching her as an animal-loving Phoebe, playfully interacting with the boys’ unusual farm-animal pets. But Lisa was reportedly scared of the duck. Presumably, she had no issues with the mild-mannered chicken.
3. CHANDLER AND PHOEBE
According to Kauffman, the writers originally thought that Phoebe and Chandler would be “secondary characters,” there to provide the humor.
The group later realized that the characters gave the show “so much more than that” and wrote in more meaningful stories.
4. THE PRODUCERS WANTED COURTENEY COX TO PLAY RACHEL
Before the premiere of the show, Courteney Cox was probably the most famous performer. He was known for many commercials and “Dancing in the Dark” by Bruce Springsteen. The producers of friends had originally asked her to play Rachel, but she asked about Monica’s role because she liked the “strong” nature.
5. MATT LEBLANC AND JENNIFER WERE NOT FANS OF RACHEL AND JOEY’S ROMANCE
Like many of the fans, the actors were not happy about the characters hooking up in the last season. They went so far as to gather the rest of the cast to air their grievance with the strange story arc. In 2012, Matt told Vanity Fair they felt it was ‘wildly inappropriate’.
Their romance ultimately only lasted three episodes before they decided they were better off as friends.
6. MONICA AND JOEY
According to the producers’ interview with NBC News, Rachel and Ross weren’t supposed to be the endgame love interests — it was originally Monica and Joey!
7. THERE WAS A CONNECTION BETWEEN FRIENDS AND HOME ALONE
In 2016, 22 Vision members shared a video documenting an unpublished 1990 connection between Friends and Home Alone. It seems that Monica and Chandler bought the house in the McCallisters movie. How is that possible? With the help of some Hollywood tricks.
8.ELLEN DeGENERES REFUSED TO PLAY PHOEBE
Of course, the funny lady had her own sitcom and later found even more success with her talk show. But it’s fascinating to think about how different the role might have been if Ellen hadn’t turned it down.
9. MATT LeBLANC IS A VERY CONSERVATIVE PERSON IN REAL LIFE
In an interview with The Mirror in 2016, LeBlanc talked about the dark side of fame. “Years and years ago, when I left the house, I was exhausted,” LeBlanc said. “I did not want to have a schedule or be anywhere, I could do it, my agent was disgusting and most actors call their agents and say,” What’s going on? I called mine and said, “Please, I lost my number for a few years, it was a very dark moment, I almost had a nervous breakdown.
10. JENNIFER ANISTON IS PROBABLY ADDICTED TO THE SHOW AS MUCH AS YOU ARE
Although there are many actors who can not bear to see their projects, Aniston is not there, at least not when it comes to friends. When he appeared in The One, Aniston said he could not help but leave the show when he was on TV. “I can not help it,” she said. “It’s just that you can get sucked in to the nostalgia of it.”
